BEST MEXICAN RESTAURANT
Winner: Salsa a la Salsa
A perennial favorite for its novel, fresh, healthy dishes, bracingly tangy margaritas, and color-saturated decor, Eat Street's Salsa a la Salsa has new competition this year—from its own outpost of the same name opened in the mercifully quiet northwest corner of the Midtown Global Market. The menu here has all of the creative preparations on offer at the original: blackened salmon tatemado, served on red and green sauces ($10.50); chicken mixotes with limey, tender cactus strips and avocado ($9.99); and one of the Twin Cities' most refreshing salads, composed of orange and jicama. In addition to black and refried beans, sides include a cardiologist-pleasing mix of perfectly grilled asparagus, carrots, red onions, and sweet peppers. For dessert, order the less virtuous but equally unusual pineapple tamale with ice cream and cranberry compote.

For formal dining, A La Salsa offers table service and a full bar. The menu is similar to sister restaurant Salsa a la Salsa, on Nicollet Mall, but if you look closely, you will find some dishes seldom available locally, such as the mixiotes de pollo (a savory dish of boneless chicken and cactus in a savory chile sauce, wrapped in a banana leaf). Noteworthy appetizers include the tostones con camarones (big shrimp served atop crisp fried plantain slices with a lively papaya chutney) and the pupusas (a Salvadoran corn cake stuffed with fresh cheese), served with the traditional accompaniment of cabbage slaw.

“A La Salsa, expect fresh ingredients, traditional execution, and delicious combinations bedecked with queso fresco and savory sauces. Pupusas, topped with pico de gallo, guacamole and tangy slaw of pickled vegetables are a showy treat.”
